Privacy policy

Last updated: 21 September 2026

Your information, your choices. Read how we handle personal information when you browse, shop or get in touch.

1. Who we are and how to contact us

The Meat Kollectiv is responsible for the personal information we use to run this store, take orders and respond to enquiries. This policy covers our website, customer accounts, purchases, forms and communications with us, including email, phone and WhatsApp.

For privacy requests, email info@themeatkollectiv.co.za with the subject “Privacy request — Information Officer”, or call +27 61 411 1439. Our contact and collection address is Unit 7 Platinum Business Park, Brackenfell, Cape Town, 7560, South Africa. Visits are by appointment.

2. Information we collect and where it comes from

Depending on how you use the store, we process:

Your name, email address, phone number, billing details and any address needed to fulfil your order.
The products you select, order and payment references, payment status, collection arrangements, order history, returns and enquiries.
Customer account details and preferences, if you use an account, and your marketing choices.
Information you provide in messages, forms or conversations with our team.
Technical and browsing information, such as IP address, browser and device details, pages viewed, cart activity and cookie identifiers.

We receive information directly from you, automatically through the website, and from Shopify, payment services and other providers helping us complete or support your transaction. If you give us someone else’s information, only share what is necessary and make sure you are entitled to do so.

Required checkout and enquiry fields are needed to process the relevant request. If you do not provide them, we may be unable to accept an order or reply. Optional phone fields, marketing subscriptions and additional information are voluntary. Please do not send identity documents, passwords, full card details or unnecessary health information through our forms or WhatsApp.

3. Why we use information

We use relevant information to process payments, prepare and fulfil orders, arrange collection or agreed delivery, provide order updates, handle enquiries and returns, maintain accounts, protect the store against fraud, and improve the shopping experience. We also keep records needed for accounting, tax, legal obligations and resolving disputes.

Under South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA), processing must have a lawful basis. Depending on the purpose, this includes performing or preparing a contract with you, complying with legal duties, protecting legitimate interests such as security and customer support, or obtaining consent where required. Reading this policy or browsing the store is not consent to every use of your information.

4. Payments and service providers

Payment details entered at checkout are processed by the payment service presented to you and the relevant platform services. We use transaction records and payment confirmations to manage your order. Do not email or message us your full card number or security code.

We share information needed for the relevant service with Shopify, payment providers, authorised team members and providers supporting website hosting, communications, order fulfilment and business administration. Delivery details are shared with a delivery provider where delivery has been arranged. Professional advisers and authorities may receive information where necessary for a legal obligation, claim or lawful request. A business transfer may involve relevant customer records, subject to applicable privacy protections. This is not permission for unrestricted sharing.

5. Shopify and international processing

Shopify hosts this store and processes customer information to provide its platform services. Shopify may also act independently for services such as Shop, Shop Pay and enhanced services, including personalisation, analytics and advertising, depending on the services and settings used. See the Shopify Consumer Privacy Policy and Shopify Privacy Portal for its practices and choices.

Shopify and other providers may process information outside South Africa, including in Canada, Singapore and other countries where they or their providers operate. Privacy laws in those countries may differ. Transfers must meet POPIA’s requirements, for example through adequate legal or contractual protection or another permitted ground such as a transfer necessary to perform your contract. Contact us if you would like information about the safeguards relevant to your data.

6. Cookies, analytics and third-party content

The store uses cookies and similar technologies for functions such as cart storage, checkout, security and remembering preferences. Analytics and advertising technologies may also process device and browsing information, depending on the services enabled and your choices. Optional tracking requires consent where the applicable law requires it.

Use the cookie or privacy controls shown on the website where available. You can also manage cookies in your browser, although blocking essential cookies may prevent checkout or other features from working. Contact us for help with your choices. Shopify explains its cookie categories in its Cookie Policy.

External fonts, embedded maps and linked services can send technical information to their providers when loaded or used. If you contact us through WhatsApp or follow links to social media or payment services, those providers also process information under their own privacy policies. Their inclusion on our website does not place their separate services under our control.

7. Marketing choices

Email, SMS and WhatsApp promotions are subject to POPIA’s direct-marketing rules. We use consent where required. The existing-customer exception applies only to our own similar products or services where the contact details were obtained during a sale and a free, straightforward opportunity to object was provided when collecting them and in each marketing message.

You can unsubscribe using the option in a message or ask us to stop by email or WhatsApp. Opting out of promotions does not stop essential messages about an order or enquiry. A request for customer support is not, by itself, a marketing subscription.

8. Retention and security

Information is kept only for as long as reasonably needed for its purpose or as required or permitted by law. The period depends on order fulfilment, customer support, account use, applicable tax and accounting obligations, disputes and security needs. Marketing suppression records may be kept to honour an opt-out. When retention is no longer justified, information should be securely deleted, destroyed or de-identified.

We are required to apply reasonable organisational and technical safeguards and require appropriate protection from providers processing information for us. No website or transmission method can guarantee absolute security. If a security compromise requires notification under POPIA, we will notify the Information Regulator and affected people as required by law. Contact us promptly if you suspect misuse of your information.

9. Your rights and requests

Subject to POPIA and applicable exceptions, you can ask whether we hold information about you, request access, ask for inaccurate information to be corrected, or request deletion where information is unlawfully held, no longer needed or otherwise eligible for deletion. You can object to qualifying processing, withdraw consent for future consent-based processing and stop direct marketing. Withdrawal does not invalidate lawful processing already carried out.

Contact us using the details above and explain your request. We may need proportionate proof of identity or authority before releasing or changing records. We will explain any lawful restriction, retention requirement or applicable access procedure. You can also ask for a review and explanation of an automated decision that materially affects you, where applicable.

10. Children’s information

This store is intended for adults placing orders. Please do not submit children’s personal information unless it is necessary and you are legally authorised to do so. If you believe a child has provided information without the required authorisation, contact us so that we can investigate and take appropriate action.

11. Complaints

You may raise a concern with us at any time. You also have the right to complain directly to South Africa’s Information Regulator; you do not have to wait for our permission. Visit inforegulator.org.za for the current complaint procedure and forms, email enquiries@inforegulator.org.za, or call 010 023 5200 for assistance.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy when our services, practices or legal requirements change. The revised version will carry an updated date. Where required, we will give additional notice or seek fresh consent. You may contact us for clarification about any change.
